Five Signs You Are Suffering from Dehydration

Dehydration is simple really. It occurs when the body loses more water than it takes in. Since the body is primarily comprised of water, not having enough means it can’t function properly. You are probably familiar with the most common effects of dehydration, but there are also subtle signs you may not be aware of.

Here are five lesser-known signs and symptoms of dehydration:
1. Bad Breath

Did you know bad breath could be a sign you are dehydrated? This is because the body can’t make enough saliva, and saliva has antibacterial properties. When you don’t have enough saliva, all sorts of bacteria starts to grow in the mouth. This leads to persistent bad breath that no amount of teeth brushing will fix.

2. Cramps

If you’re cramping up during a workout or even just after climbing some stairs, dehydration could be the culprit. Dehydration causes an electrolyte imbalance, and changes in electrolytes can lead to cramps. Your muscles also require water to function, so make sure you are hydrating before and after any strenuous activity!

3. Cravings

The liver relies on water to function properly. When you are dehydrated, it is difficult for the liver to release energy stores, notably stored glucose. This triggers cravings! So, that sweet or salty snack craving you feel could be due to dehydration. In addition, the body occasionally confuses thirst and hunger which means feeling snacky could also be due to dehydration.

4. Chills

Severe dehydration can cause chills and even fever. These conditions can cause you to lose even more fluids thus further aggravating your symptoms. Dehydration fever is especially dangerous in infants, but it can occur in adults as well. If you have a fever, make sure you drink plenty of fluids, and seek medical attention if your temperature exceeds 103 degrees.

5. Dry Skin

Some people believe that dehydration and sweaty skin go hand in hand, but the truth is, the body goes through stages of dehydration. Sweaty skin after a workout is a good indicator that you need to re-up on fluids, and dry skin is an indication that you have been deprived of fluids for a while. Dry skin caused by a lack of fluids will stay “tented” when pinched and return to normal slowly.

If any of these signs rings a bell, chances are your body could use some fluids. The fastest way to rehydrate is through IV infusion therapy. An IV drip delivers essential fluids, electrolytes, and nutrients directly to your bloodstream for maximum benefit to your health.
